Great fun and a lot of books to work your way through, which is something my kids always love. Teachers assigned to kindergarten when their preparation and/or experience is at the primary level need to explore the implications of “readiness” prior to academics. Specific abilities required for reading and writing come from immediate experiences with oral and written language. Let's just say that Language Arts is not his favorite subject, but he has managed to bring his grade up to a very high "B".

This article says that according to a new study, former full-day kindergartners were more than twice as likely as children without any kindergarten experiences – and 26 percent more likely than graduates of half-day programs – to have made it to 3rd and 4th grade without having repeated a grade. Snow (1991) has described these types of conversations as "decontextualized language" in which teachers may induce higher-level thinking by moving experiences in stories from what the children may see in front of them to what they can imagine.

Beginning readers should attempt to learn only a few new sight words at a time – certainly no more than ten. Before expecting a child to be able to read and understand a story, the question should be asked, "Could the child understand this story if it was read TO her?" Time4Learning teaches reading comprehension as part of an overall language arts program for enrichment, remediation, summer use, or homeschooling. It would be fun to have students create their own. Vocabulary development involves coming to understand unfamiliar words and being able to use them appropriately.
