There have always been exceptions to many of these formalities, but the reverence that surrounded early tea production cannot be doubted. Tea would most likely spread from Yunnan into Sichuan, and then down along the Yangtze river, eventually passing through the famous “Three Gorges” to Hunnan and Hubei provinces. From there it would slowly diffuse to the other tea growing regions of China. Some of this propagation perhaps occurred naturally, though most plants were probably transplanted by man.
There is much in the etymology of the character for tea that I find inspiring. I am moved by the simplicity of drawing a man between leaves, roots, and the trunk of a tree. I once read a Native American myth that told of a warrior that turned into a tree when his people died; first his arms became branches, then his feet slowly moved 47 48 Chapter 2 beneath the earth and extended his spirit into roots, and finally he was a tree left to watch over the land he had been born on. The metaphor of becoming Nature is also expressed, to me, in this interpretation of the character for tea.
There they would seek out the origins of life and man’s place in it. Through diet, meditation, and quiet, one imagines, these ancient sages and seers were able to commune with the world around them, learning of the healing powers available in Nature. In crude huts or cave hermitages, surrounded by the forests of Yunnan—in all their glory—man would first establish a relationship with the Leaf. Perhaps it was intuition, or maybe they touched or tasted various leaves experimentally, expanding their medicinal knowledge through trial and error.
